Sergei Khrushchev, the son of Soviet leader Khrushchev, died of a gunshot wound at his home in Rhode Island at the age of 84.Sergei died of a gunshot wound to the head on the 18th, the Associated Press reported Thursday, citing a Rhode Island coroner.

Rhode Island police received an early morning call from Sergei’s wife to their home in Cranston. Sergei was dead when the police arrived at the scene. Local police officer Todd patrano said on the 24th that there was no sign of “external misconduct” leading to Sergei’s death. The police have now closed the case and no criminal proceedings have been brought against anyone.

Sergei was a Soviet rocket expert in his early years. He moved to Rhode Island in 1991 and taught cold war related courses at Brown University. Sergei and his wife, Valentina, became US citizens in July 1999. In an interview, he said that Khrushchev, his father who died in 1971, should support his decision.

Valentina told Russia’s TASS that a funeral for Sergei would be held in Moscow in October.
