U.N. human rights agency strongly condemns the death of African American man

On June 19, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution by consensus on June 19, expressing “strong condemnation” for the death of African American man George Freud after he was violently enforced by the police, and calling on relevant countries to take effective measures to promote and protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Africans and people of African descent.Do you know how George Freud died?

The newly adopted resolution, sponsored by Burkina Faso and other countries, is entitled “preventing the excessive use of force and other human rights violations by law enforcement officials and promoting and protecting the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Africans and people of African descent”.

The resolution said that while strongly condemning Freud’s death, the UN Human Rights Council also condemned the continued racial discrimination and violence against Africans and people of African descent by the relevant law enforcement agencies exposed in the incident.

The resolution expressed that the United Nations Human Rights Council was shocked by the rise of violent thinking based on racial or ethnic prejudice, such as violence, racial hatred, hate speech, hate crime and Neo Nazism, and deplored the violent treatment of peaceful demonstrators by relevant law enforcement agencies.

The resolution requests the United Nations High Commissioner for human rights to prepare a report on systematic racism and human rights violations by law enforcement agencies as soon as possible, to review the measures taken by the governments concerned to respond to peaceful protests against racism, and to continue to pay attention to the subsequent events triggered by Freud’s death.

On May 25 this year, white police in Minneapolis used their knees to press Freud’s neck for a long time when they arrested him, and Freud died. The incident triggered a wave of mass protests in the United States and many countries. From June 17 to 18, at the request of the African group of the United Nations, the Human Rights Council of the United Nations held an emergency meeting to focus on racism, police violence and other issues exposed by Freud’s death.
